Slave being tortured, flogged and killed to entertain and amuse the guests and family.

Here, we continue to illustrate how much slaves in Rome could suffer.

No law or ethical or moral principle in Roman society condemned the torture or murder of slaves or any other type of animal.
The sacrifice or slaughter of any animal was considered normal; on several occasions, it was custom, tradition, habit, or elegance. The Colosseum and other public places held massive executions and massacres to jubilant audiences.

Showing complete disregard for the pain and suffering of slaves was considered good form, especially among the upper classes and elite. Watching slaves being tortured was often simple entertainment, pure pleasure, and delight.
There are reports of brutal torture sessions used to encourage social or family gatherings. The victims' despair, pleading, moaning, and crying were considered as pleasurable as the music.

In this drawing, we see a happy family together on a particular day, waiting for lunch while we watch the guest of honor crush the nipples of a strong slave tied naked to a pillar in the house. The youngest son asks his mother if she can tear the animal's testicles, and the oldest son gently caresses his nipples; he is drunk and takes pleasure in seeing the slave's nipples being plucked.

The slave did not commit any act that would justify the cruelty of his execution. He was captured as a child, with his family and cattle, in the battles that pushed the limits of the empire. Being from a farming family, he worked chained and tied up for several years as a beast of burden. He never revolted, created problems, or questioned his status as a slave. He enjoyed working in the fields, pulling the cart and plowing like an ox, working the harvest, and carrying the sacks of grain without complaining. He was rarely whipped or punished; his foreman was fair and balanced.

He believed he would still live a few good years, but the week before the business lunch, the family's wife asked the foreman to choose a robust and well-endowed slave to entertain and fun for the invited friends.

During the meal, which would last many hours, even in another room, despite the loud conversations and laughter, the diners would hear the slave being whipped and moaning. The foreman will use the heaviest and loudest whip to force the animal to moan and scream loud enough for him to hear. The success of the event would be regrettable if the slave died quickly. Knowing how to cause pain and suffering spectacularly, pleasing the public without letting the animal die or even faint before the scheduled time, was a highly valued art.

After lunch, before sunset, the woman makes the offering at the altar of the family's ancestors, burning the testicles, eyes, ears, tongue, and other parts torn from the barbarian. This offering brings good luck to the family and their guests.
